The Latymer Prep 7 Plus Exam: The Syllabus

Latymer Prep uses its own bespoke papers, examples are sent to parents after registration. Much like the St Paul's Juniors 7+ syllabus, these papers are designed to differentiate between children who have memorised patterns and those who can think on their feet.

1. English: The Depth of Understanding

The English paper at Latymer is about more than just reading; it's about analysis.

Comprehension: Your child will be asked to infer meaning. Why is a character "clutching their bag"? They need to explain the emotion behind the action.

Creative Writing: Latymer rewards flair. They want to see a "voice" that stands out from the crowd.

Expert Tip: Avoid "cliché" plots. Examiners see a hundred "haunted house" stories. To stand out, focus on high-level vocabulary and varied sentence starts. Our £1.99 Uplevelling Sentences Pack is designed specifically to help Year 2s find the sophisticated language that Latymer markers crave.

2. Mathematics: Logic over Arithmetic

While strong arithmetic is the baseline, Latymer’s Maths paper leans heavily into problem-solving.

The Focus: Multi-step word problems and logical puzzles.

The Goal: They want to see the "working out." Latymer values a child who tries a difficult logic puzzle and shows their thought process, even if the final answer is slightly off.

Preparation: Practice with non-standard problems. Our 7+ Mathematics Mastery Workbook mirrors the "Latymer-style" logic puzzles that test true mathematical potential rather than just rote learning.

3. Reasoning

Latymer includes Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning to assess raw cognitive ability. These are timed sections that require high levels of concentration - essential for any competitive London entrance exam.

Stage 2: Latymer's 7+ "Interactive" Assessment - Group Activity & Interview

If your child is shortlisted, they will be invited for a half-day of activities.

The Format: A mix of small-group tasks and a short 1-to-1 conversation with a teacher.

What they are looking for: Teachability. If a teacher gives your child a new piece of information, can they apply it? Do they listen to their peers in a group task? Can they collaborate with others and contribute towards a shared goal?

The best Latymer 7+ advice is to move away from repetitive drills. Because the school looks for "potential," your child needs to be comfortable with the unknown.

Master the Language: Give your child the creative edge with our £1.99 Uplevelling Sentences Pack. It's the "cheat code" for moving from a standard story to a Latymer-level composition.
