St Paul’s Juniors 7+ Entrance Exam: what to expect and how to pass

Updated: 2 days ago

Securing a place at St Paul’s Juniors (formerly Colet Court) is one of the most sought-after achievements on the London 7+ circuit. Known for its academic rigour and focus on deep, logical thinking, the St Paul’s 7+ process is designed to find natural ability rather than just well-tutored children.

If your son is sitting the St Paul's Juniors 7+ exam, here is exactly what you need to know about the syllabus, the timeline and the "St Paul’s Standard."

The St Paul’s Juniors 7+ Timeline

  • Registration Opens: Usually early February of Year 1.

  • The Exam: Mid November of Year 2.

  • Second Stage (Interviews): Late November/Early December.

  • Offers Sent: Mid December.

The Three Pillars of the SPJ 7+ Exam

1. Mathematics: Beyond Arithmetic

St Paul’s doesn't just want to see that your child can add and subtract. They are testing for mathematical flair.

  • What to expect: While the paper starts with standard Year 2/3 curriculum questions, it quickly evolves into multi-step word problems and "out of the box" logic puzzles.

  • The "Mastery" Tip: Your child needs to be comfortable with Logic Grids and Shape Algebra. They aren't just looking for the answer; they are looking for the systematic "Working Out" that proves the child understands the process.

2. English: Comprehension and Dictation

The English paper at St Paul’s is split into two distinct sections: Comprehension and Dictation.

  • Comprehension: This isn't a "find the word" exercise. Questions often require inference (reading between the lines) and explaining why a character feels a certain way.

  • Dictation: Markers are looking for spelling, punctuation and neat handwriting. Success at SPJ 7+ requires quick writing and excellent sentence structure, combined with neat presentation.

3. Reasoning: The Hidden Paper

Reasoning (Verbal and Non-Verbal) is the "hidden" separator. Many schools don't teach this in the standard curriculum, yet it is a core component of the St Paul's assessment.

  • Non-Verbal: Identifying patterns, rotations, and reflections in shapes.

  • Verbal: Word-based logic, synonyms, and sequence completion.

The Second Stage: The Assessment Day

If your son is shortlisted, he will be invited back for a stage two assessment. This is not another desk-based exam.

  • Group Activities: Teachers observe how the boys interact. Are they kind? Do they listen? Do they dominate the conversation or collaborate?

  • The Interview: A 1-to-1 (or possibly 2-to-1) chat with a senior staff member. They might be given a short text to read aloud or a logic puzzle to solve on the spot. St Paul’s is looking for "teachability" and natural ability.

How to Prepare for the St Paul’s Standard

To bridge the gap between "Year 2 schoolwork" and the "St Paul’s Standard," children need exposure to high-level reasoning and sophisticated logic puzzles.

Our 7+ Mathematics Mastery and Logic Series was built specifically for this purpose. With dedicated "Working Out" space and puzzles that mimic the difficulty of the SPJ paper (view an example below), it helps children develop the systematic thinking required to secure an offer.
